LMIA Readiness Check (Employers)

For employers planning to hire a temporary foreign worker: check the structural basics — business history, four weeks of advertising, prevailing wage, recruitment records, caps, and fees — before you file.

Pre-filing checklist

Which wage stream is the position in? *

Compare the offered wage to the provincial/territorial median wage on Job Bank.

Check everything that is already in place

The business has been actively operating for at least 12 months, with a CRA business number and financial documents available (T2, GST filings, or equivalent)

The job has been posted on Job Bank plus at least two other recruitment channels for 4 consecutive weeks within the last 3 months

The offered wage meets or exceeds the current prevailing (median) wage for the occupation and region on Job Bank

A recruitment report is prepared — Canadian applicants counted, interviewed where qualified, with documented reasons any were not hired

For low-wage positions: the position complies with the low-wage cap on the workforce share of temporary foreign workers, and the work location is not in a region where low-wage processing is paused

The $1,000 LMIA processing fee per position is budgeted (and cannot be recovered from the worker)
